Gulf of Guinea Commission Engages Ghana’s Fisheries Minister Ahead of Regional Blue Economy Workshop

Accra, Ghana — 16 May, 2025

In a bid to strengthen regional collaboration on maritime governance and sustainable ocean development, Dr. Emmanuel Badu Addo, Director of Administration at the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC), paid a working visit to the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur, earlier today.

The purpose of the visit was to brief the Hon. Minister on Ghana’s contributions to the work of the Commission and to formally present an invitation from the Executive Secretary of the GGC. The invitation calls on Hon. Arthur to participate in a high-level regional workshop on the “Blue Economy Action Plan of the Gulf of Guinea”, slated to take place from 28th to 30th May 2025 in Luanda, Angola.

Ghana to Deliver Opening Address

As a key part of the workshop programme, Hon. Emelia Arthur is scheduled to deliver the opening address, where she will highlight Ghana’s leadership and strategic contributions to the Gulf of Guinea Commission and the broader Blue Economy agenda.

The event is expected to bring together policymakers, technical experts, and development partners from across the sub-region to reflect on the progress made in implementing the African Union Agenda 2015–2025 and the AU’s Integrated Maritime Strategy 2050 (AIM 2050).

A Platform for Partnership and Progress

The upcoming workshop aims to serve as a vital platform for:

  • Dialogue and knowledge exchange among member states
  • Assessment of regional progress in the Blue Economy sector
  • Fostering stronger cooperation toward maritime security and ocean governance

Ghana’s Strategic Role

Ghana’s participation in the workshop is viewed as a valuable opportunity to:

  • Showcase its leadership in sustainable fisheries management
  • Draw lessons from the experiences of other African Union member states
  • Inform national policy formulation and implementation
  • Attract investment into the Blue Economy sector
  • Reinforce regional integration aligned with Ghana’s national development goals

This engagement underscores Ghana’s continued commitment to marine resource protection, sustainable economic growth, and active participation in shaping the future of the Blue Economy in the Gulf of Guinea region.

As Ghana moves forward with its Blue Economy agenda, its presence at the workshop in Luanda will help consolidate its role as a regional leader in ocean governance and sustainable fisheries development.
