Ghana’s Fisheries Sector Poised for Transformation Following High-Level Meeting

In a strategic push to revitalise Ghana’s fisheries industry, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur, has engaged in high-level discussions with renowned fisheries economist, Professor Rashid Sumaila of the University of British Columbia, Canada.

The meeting focused on innovative approaches to reshape the sector, with Professor Sumaila stressing the importance of harnessing global expertise and networks to drive sustainable growth. He commended Hon. Arthur’s leadership and vision, noting her commitment to positioning Ghana’s fisheries on the international stage.

Hon. Arthur welcomed the Professor’s perspectives and expressed a keen interest in tapping into his global connections to secure funding from top international organisations committed to sustainable fisheries. She also highlighted the Ministry’s determination to strengthen research capacity and embrace data-driven strategies to guide both policy and operational decisions.

This collaboration signals a major step toward building a resilient, research-driven, and globally competitive fisheries sector, one capable of safeguarding marine resources while supporting the livelihoods of millions of Ghanaians.
