The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur, has expressed strong support for the newly launched “Tilapia and Catfish Friday” initiative aimed at promoting local fish consumption and strengthening Ghana’s aquaculture industry.

The launch, held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), was organized by the Ghana National Aquaculture Association as part of efforts to advance the government’s Feed Ghana Agenda.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Emelia Arthur commended the Association for introducing innovative value-added products such as fish sausages, crackers, powder, and smoked tilapia and catfish. According to her, these products not only expand consumer choices but also enhance branding, extend shelf life, and open new market opportunities for fish farmers.
The initiative prioritizes:
- Expanding hatcheries for high-quality fingerlings
- Ensuring affordable and nutritious fish feed
- Improving cold chain and market infrastructure
- Strengthening research and innovation with academia and industry
- Enforcing biosecurity and disease control on farms
- Upholding food safety and environmental sustainability
Hon. Arthur reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting aquaculture as a vital sector for job creation, particularly for women and youth, while also contributing to improved nutrition and food security nationwide.

She emphasized that by investing in innovation and sustainable practices, aquaculture can drive national development, reduce reliance on fish imports, and position Ghana as a leader in the fisheries sector.
