Ghana Science Association Engages Fisheries Ministry Ahead of Major Blue Economy Workshop

The Ghana Science Association (GSA) has paid a courtesy call on the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture as part of preparations toward its 20th Biennial Workshop slated for September 2026.

The high-level engagement saw the Association formally invite the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, to serve as keynote speaker at the opening ceremony of the workshop, which will be held under the theme “Advancing Ghana’s Blue Economy: Securing Our Shores, Feeding Our Future.” The event is expected to take place at the School of Graduate Studies.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister, Chief Director Afisah Zakariah welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the programme. She underscored the critical role of science-based research in driving sustainable development within Ghana’s fisheries and coastal sectors.

The upcoming workshop will bring together academia, researchers, and policymakers to explore innovative, science-driven solutions to challenges affecting Ghana’s coastal and marine environment. Discussions are expected to focus on translating research into practical strategies that will strengthen the fisheries sector and boost national economic growth.

The GSA also used the opportunity to highlight its ongoing educational efforts, particularly its “Every Science for School” publication series, which introduces students at the junior and senior high school levels to key scientific topics including environmental sustainability, agriculture, public health, and the coastal economy.

Dr. Zakariah further called on research institutions to intensify studies into pressing health concerns such as cancer and kidney disease, stressing the need for targeted research to uncover root causes and develop effective interventions.

The 20th Biennial Workshop is anticipated to serve as a key platform for shaping policy dialogue and fostering collaboration toward a more sustainable and resilient blue economy in Ghana.
