Ghana Explores Strategic Partnership with Bloomberg Ocean Fund for Ocean Sustainability

Busan, South Korea – April 29, 2025

Ghana has taken another bold step in its pursuit of sustainable ocean governance following a bilateral meeting between Hon. Emelia Arthur, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, and Mr. Jonathan Kelsey, Director of the Bloomberg Ocean Fund, on the sidelines of the 10th Our Ocean Conference at BEXCO in Busan, Korea.

The meeting marked a significant milestone in laying the foundation for a strategic partnership between Ghana and the Bloomberg Ocean Fund a leading initiative focused on enhancing global ocean health through investment, innovation, and multi-stakeholder collaboration.

Hon. Emelia Arthur expressed Ghana’s readiness to explore innovative approaches that support resilient fisheries, marine biodiversity conservation, and the blue economy agenda. She emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring the health of Ghana’s marine environment, combating illegal fishing, and building climate resilience within coastal communities.

Mr. Kelsey reaffirmed the Bloomberg Ocean Fund’s mission to support countries and partners that are making impactful strides in ocean sustainability. He commended Ghana for its proactive reforms in fisheries governance and expressed enthusiasm for exploring aligned areas of collaboration.

The meeting concluded with a shared agreement to develop a framework that will coordinate future collaborative efforts, including technical support, policy alignment, and innovative financing models to scale up Ghana’s marine conservation initiatives.

This engagement comes at a crucial time as Ghana accelerates reforms to strengthen its fisheries sector and establish its first Marine Protected Area (MPA) at the Greater Cape Three Points. The partnership with the Bloomberg Ocean Fund is expected to inject both strategic insight and resources into the country’s long-term marine sustainability agenda.

The 10th Our Ocean Conference continues to provide a global platform for forging partnerships that support the health of our oceans and the well-being of millions who depend on them.
