Fisheries Sector Charts Stronger Performance Path at Management Performance Retreat, Accra, Ghana – February 4, 2026  

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture and its agencies, the Fisheries Commission and the National Premix Fuel Secretariat, successfully held a two-day 2025 Fisheries Sector Management Performance Meeting to review sector performance and set clear priorities for 2026. 

The retreat, held from 3rd to 4th February 2026 at La Villa Boutique Hotel, Osu, brought together management and technical leadership across the fisheries and aquaculture sector to assess progress made in 2025, identify gaps, and agree on practical actions to accelerate delivery in 2026. 

Minister Calls for Stronger Results and Renewed Commitment  

On the opening day of the retreat, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur, charged staff and management to raise the bar in the coming year. “The two days should be very productive. This year, we have to do much more than we did last year. Let us ensure that these two days move the sector forward and truly matter,” the Minister stated.  

Hon. Arthur encouraged staff across all directorates and divisions to give their best, emphasizing that improved coordination, accountability, and results-driven leadership are critical to delivering on the Government’s fisheries transformation agenda. 

Directorates Present 2025 Performance and 2026 Outlook. As part of the retreat, Directorates and Divisions under the Ministry and the Fisheries Commission presented detailed progress reports on their 2025 performance, alongside outlooks and priority actions for 2026.   

Presentations covered key functional areas including:Policy, Planning, Budgeting, Monitoring and Evaluation Research, Statistics and Information Management, Finance, Administration and Accounts, Human Resource Management, Internal Audit and the Blue Economy Secretariat, The Fisheries Commission also presented performance updates from its Marine Fisheries Management, Aquaculture, Inland Fisheries, Post-Harvest Management and Trade, Monitoring, Control and Surveillance, and Fisheries Scientific Survey Divisions, as well as regional performance reports from all Regional Directors. 

These sessions provided a platform for candid discussions on operational challenges, resource constraints, and opportunities to improve service delivery and sector governance. The National Premix Fuel Secretariat presented on premix fuel management and distribution, highlighting progress, emerging issues, and measures to strengthen transparency and efficiency to support artisanal fishing communities. 

An open forum allowed participants to share insights, raise concerns, and propose practical solutions to strengthen inter-agency collaboration and improve sector performance. The discussions culminated in a clear way forward, outlining priority actions, timelines, and accountability measures for 2026. 

The retreat concluded with closing remarks by the Hon. Minister, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to rebuilding fish stocks, expanding aquaculture, strengthening livelihoods, and ensuring sustainable management of Ghana’s fisheries resources.
