Fisheries Minister Tours Kwahu Aquaculture Facility to Boost Youth Training and Job Creation

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur, has visited an aquaculture facility established by the Kwahu Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture Development in the Kwahu West Municipality, reaffirming government’s commitment to promoting aquaculture for food security and employment creation.

The working visit, which followed earlier engagements with traditional authorities, was aimed at strengthening collaboration with the Foundation and supporting its role in driving sustainable food supply and job opportunities.

As part of her visit, the Minister paid a courtesy call on the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Tamimu Halidu, before touring the Family and Friends Fisheries Limited in Nkawkaw, a facility developed by the Foundation. The project harnesses natural water from the Kwahu mountains for tilapia and catfish farming, ensuring high-quality fish production through oxygen-rich water.

Addressing chiefs, students, and stakeholders, Hon. Emelia Arthur commended the initiative, describing it as a model for aquaculture growth in Ghana. She stressed the need to replicate such facilities across communities, while also advocating for the establishment of fish processing markets to make fish trading more accessible to players in the value chain.

The Minister also interacted with students from Mpraeso Senior High School’s Agriculture Department and pledged to provide fingerlings to support aquaculture training. Nkawkaw Senior High School is also expected to benefit from fingerlings and resources to enhance hands-on learning in aquaculture.

Hon. Arthur reaffirmed her Ministry’s resolve to build partnerships with institutions like the Kwahu Foundation to create decent jobs, equip the youth with modern fish farming skills, and drive community development through aquaculture.
