In a move that reinforces the strong bilateral ties between Ghana and the United States, a delegation from the United States Embassy in Accra has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur, to explore new areas of collaboration within Ghana’s fisheries and aquaculture sector.
The delegation was led by the Chargé D’Affaires Rolf Olson, Political Associate – Michael Kmiecinski, Regional Environmental, Science, Technology and Health Officer – Anthony Eterno.
The engagement provided an opportunity for both sides to reaffirm their commitment to deepening cooperation, particularly in advancing sustainable fisheries management and responsible aquaculture development.
In his remarks, Mr. Olson emphasized that the United States shares Ghana’s concerns over Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, describing it as a global challenge that undermines marine ecosystems, livelihoods, and food security. He noted that the U.S.

Government remains keenly interested in supporting initiatives that strengthen governance, enhance sustainability, and unlock private sector investment across the fisheries value chain.Mr. Olson further highlighted emerging business and investment opportunities within Ghana’s fisheries sector, indicating that closer collaboration could attract technical expertise, innovative technologies, and responsible investment to support sector growth.
Responding, Minister Emelia Arthur reiterated the Government’s strong focus on aquaculture as a strategic priority, pointing to its potential to drive economic growth, create jobs for youth and women, and improve national food security. She outlined key capacity gaps within the sector, including the need for enhanced vessel monitoring systems to improve surveillance at sea and robust fish health management frameworks to support a modern, resilient aquaculture industry.The Minister stressed that strategic partnerships with international allies such as the United

States are critical to addressing these challenges effectively.
