Ministry of Fisheries Engages FAO on Strategic Partnership Ahead of Regional Conference

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has held a high-level meeting with the Food and Agriculture Organization Country Representative to Ghana, Priya Gujadhur, to strengthen collaboration and discuss key initiatives aimed at advancing Ghana’s fisheries sector.

The visit also served as an official invitation to the Minister, Emelia Arthur, to participate in the 34th FAO Regional Conference for Africa scheduled for 13th-17th April in Nouakchott, Mauritania. The conference is expected to shape FAO’s strategic agenda across the continent, with contributions from key sector ministries, including fisheries and aquaculture.

During the engagement, the FAO delegation emphasized the importance of the conference as a platform for knowledge-sharing, policy dialogue, and collaboration through roundtable discussions and technical workshops. These sessions are designed to deepen partnerships and align priorities between FAO and its member countries.

The team also presented ongoing projects in Ghana, highlighting efforts to:

            •           Strengthen grassroots governance in the fisheries sector

            •           Develop a National Plan of Action for small-scale fisheries

            •           Support the implementation of the Fisheries Law (Act 1146)

            •           Promote partnerships with small-scale fisheries under the school feeding programme.

            •           Boost aquaculture development, particularly in northern Ghana

In her remarks, Minister Emelia Arthur commended FAO for its continued support and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to deepening the partnership. She stressed the need to strengthen governance structures at the grassroots level, noting that accountability remains critical to building a resilient and sustainable fisheries sector.

The Minister also called for FAO’s support in introducing modern fish processing technologies to improve efficiency and value addition within the industry. She further urged the expansion of joint programmes and projects to accelerate growth and transformation in the sector.

The meeting marks another step in Ghana’s efforts to build strategic alliances that will enhance fisheries management, support livelihoods, and ensure long-term sustainability of marine resources.
