The Women in Aquatic Science and Management Network (WASMaN) engaged the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture today, October 7, 2026, at the Ministry to introduce its work and explore opportunities for collaboration to strengthen women’s participation in the fisheries sector.
President of WASMAN, Dr. Alberta Sagoe, stated that the network was established to strengthen women’s participation in aquatic science and management by connecting practitioners, supporting research and mentorship, and bringing evidence into policy discussions.
Dr. Sagoe noted that WASMaN’s scope covers fisheries, aquaculture, freshwater and marine science, coastal management, conservation and development.
Dr. Sagoe explained that WASMaN has different membership categories, including students, early-career professionals, professionals, fellows, and associate or ally members. The network also has a leadership committee and a secretariat responsible for coordinating its activities.

She highlighted some of WASMaN’s initiatives, including its Research Spotlight, which provides members with a platform to share their research through webinars, articles and other formats. She also mentioned WASMaN knowledge bites, a one-page knowledge-sharing initiative covering issues at the intersection of science and management, as well as planned mentorship and capacity-strengthening programmes.
Dr. Sagoe said the network is currently self-funded but is working to secure support to implement more programmes, particularly community engagement activities. She added that the network had submitted several proposals for consideration as part of efforts to secure funding for its activities.
The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur, welcomed the initiative and expressed interest in exploring ways the Ministry and WASMaN could work together to support the development and visibility of women in the fisheries sector.
The engagement provided an opportunity for the Ministry and WASMaN to discuss areas of mutual interest and explore ways of strengthening collaboration in research, mentorship, capacity strengthening and other initiatives that will enhance women’s contribution and visibility in the fisheries sector.
