ACCRA, September 17, 2026 — The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representative in Ghana, Mr. Meshack Oguna Malo, has paid a courtesy visit to the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur, to formally introduce himself and explore areas of collaboration towards strengthening Ghana’s fisheries sector and improving the livelihoods of fishing communities.

The meeting, held at the Minister’s Conference Room on Thursday, September 17, 2026, focused on strengthening cooperation in fisheries governance, sustainability, financing, data management and support for organised fishing communities.

Mr. Malo reaffirmed FAO’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s fisheries sector and emphasised the importance of strengthened collaboration to promote sustainable fisheries management, improve fisheries documentation and data systems, mobilise financing, and support the effective implementation of relevant laws and policies.

In response, Hon. Emelia Arthur outlined the Ministry’s four-year plan to establish a more sustainable and resilient fisheries sector, with particular emphasis on marine fisheries, inland fisheries and aquaculture development.

She highlighted key priorities of the Ministry, including tackling Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, reducing post-harvest losses, improving canoe registration and licensing, strengthening fisheries data systems, and enhancing data collection and management.

The Minister expressed the Ministry’s commitment to deepening its collaboration with FAO and other stakeholders to advance sustainable fisheries management, strengthen the sector’s contribution to national development, and improve the livelihoods of fisherfolk and fisheries-dependent communities.
