The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture is partnering with the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations on the Africa AI and Cybersecurity Landscape Initiative, a collaborative programme being implemented by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
The initiative aims at the development, adoption, and governance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity across the fisheries sector. It brings together key stakeholders to explore how emerging technologies can be harnessed to drive innovation, improve service delivery, and strengthen digital resilience across various sectors.
The Lead for Boston Consulting Group, Mr. Kennedy Kitheka, described the initiative as both timely and critical, given the growing influence of AI on economies and societies worldwide. He emphasized the importance of understanding Africa’s unique context in shaping AI and cybersecurity solutions that respond to local challenges and opportunities.
The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur, highlighted the immense potential of AI in transforming Ghana’s fisheries sector. She identified compliance and enforcement of fisheries regulations, as well as the safety and security of fishers at sea, as key areas where AI-powered solutions could significantly enhance operational efficiency and decision-making.
According to the Minister, leveraging emerging technologies could support efforts to combat illegal fishing activities, improve monitoring and surveillance, and strengthen systems that protect fishers and coastal communities.
The focal person from the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations noted that the collaboration represents an important step toward strengthening Ghana’s digital ecosystem. He stated that the initiative would contribute to improving the country’s data systems, enhancing cybersecurity preparedness, and supporting the responsible adoption of AI technologies across government institutions.
The Africa AI and Cybersecurity Landscape Initiative is expected to generate valuable insights and recommendations that will guide policy development and foster greater collaboration among participating countries as they work toward building secure, inclusive, and technology-driven economies.
