The Central Regional Chief Fishermen Union, led by its President, Nana Kwamena Sanka II, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon. Emelia Arthur. The meeting focused on seeking government support through tax waivers for the importation of essential fishing equipment such as outboard motors, fishing nets, freezers, and other machinery used by fisherfolk.
During the discussions, Nana Kwamena Sanka II highlighted that the Union is working with private partners who are ready to supply these items to local fisherfolk. However, he emphasized that a tax waiver is crucial to ensure that the equipment is affordable and accessible.
Hon. Emelia Arthur expressed her appreciation for the efforts of the Union and commended their initiative to unite under a formal structure to advocate for the needs of fisherfolk. She noted that while the Ministry is supportive of such initiatives, it does not have the mandate to grant tax waivers. These waivers, she explained, can only be processed through proper channels and must ultimately receive approval from Parliament.
She further advised the Union to be well-informed about the specifications of the machinery they intend to procure, to ensure compliance with national regulations and avoid any legal breaches.
The engagement forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration between government and key stakeholders in the fisheries sector for the sustainable development of coastal communities.
